The candidate should have experience in Palaeolithic archaeology, ideally also a bit of chemistry, and/or archaeometry. The thesis work will be conducted on ancient adhesives from Europe (Neanderthal birch tar) and southern Africa (tars made by early Homo sapiens) and will include fieldwork there. The objective of this doctoral project is to find out how adhesives were produced in these contexts (raw materials, production techniques).
