The position includes research within the frame of the project “The Scribe’s Choice: Writing Supports in Arabic Documents of the Early Islamic Centuries”, which will be part of the Cluster’s new research field 'Material Choices' in the EXC Understanding Written Artefacts. The scope of the research will be determined together with the successful candidate. Preferred is a background in natural sciences (particularly, archaeometry, material or conservation sciences), and/or Islamic studies. The candidate should be familiar with various methods in material analysis and have experience in working with XRF, FTIR or Raman spectrometers. Experience in working with diverse written artefact materials is required, such as papyri, parchment, textiles, bone, wood, ceramics, or stone. Fluency in spoken and written English is compulsory, knowledge of Arabic, Greek or Coptic is an advantage.
