This studentship is situated within the interdisciplinary research project ENDURE: Urban Life in a Time of Crisis. Enduring Urban Lifeways in Later Medieval England, which seeks to understand how urban life endured through, and was transformed by, the crises of the 14th century. The 14th century was a period characterised by crises, including crop failures, disease (including the Black Death) and warfare. This is a period during which towns are commonly thought to have experienced economic and social decline. ENDURE capitalises on a mass of archaeological data from work in small towns across England to explore diversity in the experiences of the households and communities who lived through these crises. The project focusses on the analysis of archaeobotanical data from medieval small towns across England to understand the changing role of horticulture, methods of food production and the environment of these places. In particular, a focus on botanical evidence, alongside work undertaken by project team members on animal husbandry, allows a consideration of the changing relationships between the economies of ‘urban’ and ‘rural’ communities. The ENDURE project is focussed around 3 core pillars; Production, Commerce and Domesticity.
