A highly motivated candidate is sought to take up this fully-funded PhD Studentship in Palaeolithic Archaeology at the University of Exeter, offered within the remit of the ERC-funded MAMBA (Mammoth Bone Accumulations of Central Europe) project. MAMBA seeks to understand the genesis of large mammoth bone accumulations in Central Europe 35,000-25,000 years ago and explore the functions they held for Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer societies. Funded by an ERC consolidator grant (no. 101045245), this research brings together an international team of researchers and a broad range of scientific techniques to investigate the following overarching questions: Were there changes in mammoth population demography in the 35-25 ka interval? Were there important techno-cultural changes in hunter-gatherer societies between 35-25 ka, and if so, what scope of human behaviour do these encompass? Were there significant palaeoenvironmental changes during 35-25 ka that influenced mammoth populations, hunter-gatherer societies and specific human-mammoth interactions?
